Teens & Ecigs

Appeal to Young People

Youth and young adults cite a variety of reasons for using e-cigarettes. These include:

  • Curiosity
  • Taste, including the flavors available in e-cigarettes
  • The belief that e-cigarettes are less harmful than other tobacco products

Flavored e-cigarettes are very popular, especially with young adults. More than 9 of 10 young adult e-cigarette users said they use e-cigarettes flavored to taste like menthol, alcohol, candy, fruit, chocolate, or other sweets. More than 8 of 10 youth ages 12-17 who use e-cigarettes said they use flavored e-cigarettes.

Teen Beliefs

Youth tobacco use in any form, including e-cigarettes, is unsafe. But a recent national survey showed that more than 6 of 10 American teens believe that e-cigarettes cause little or only some harm as long as they are used sometimes but not every day. Nearly 20% of young adults believe e-cigarettes cause no harm, more than half believe that they are moderately harmful, and 26.8% believe they are very harmful.

Young people who use e-cigarettes are more likely to believe they cause no harm than those who have never used e-cigarettes.

The Bottom Line

Nicotine exposure during adolescence, a critical period for brain development, can cause addiction and can harm the developing brain.

Scientists are still learning more about how e-cigarettes affect health. However, there is already enough evidence to justify efforts to prevent e-cigarette use by young people.

Because most tobacco use starts during adolescence, actions to protect our nation’s young people from a lifetime of nicotine addiction are critical.

Working together, we can keep America’s youth and young adults safe from the dangers associated with tobacco use and nicotine addiction.

Prayers Answered!!!

Mary’s Story
This is my story about when I started smoking and when I quit smoking. I was in labor with my daughter and my husband smoked at that time. I would lite his cigarettes for him sometimes. I noticed when I was in labor when I inhaled the smoke and released it my pain was controllable. Being young and did not know inhaling and exhaling was a technique to help control labor pain, that is how I started smoking. I went to see my doctor about a surgery that I had put off for years. The doctor told me that it was time to have the surgery done, but I needed to stop smoking for at least 2 weeks. I asked why and he stated there could be a chance my lungs could collapse and I could possibly die. So I prayed about the situation and asked God to help me stop smoking. I put in my mind if I could stop for 2 weeks I could stop forever. So I stopped for those 2 weeks and when I returned home from the hospital I tried to start back but the cigarettes did not taste right. So I thought well God did answer my prayer and that was in December of 1995 and I am still smoke free to this day. I feel better about myself I never knew how bad smoke smell on your body, skin and breath. I thank God for being smoke free for 21 years now.

Let’s Do Something

There’s something wrong with this picture:

The Walt Disney Company owns a major stake in VICE Media, a youth-oriented media company. And VICE has been producing ads for Philip Morris International (Marlboro)!

Tell Disney to push VICE to end its relationship with Philip Morris.

It’s highly irresponsible for VICE to use its expertise in youth marketing to help the tobacco industry sell more of its deadly products around the world. And Disney shouldn’t be associated with companies that act in a socially irresponsible manner and contribute to the global tobacco epidemic.

For kids’ sake, Disney must demand that VICE stop working for the tobacco industry. Please send Disney a message today.

Thanks for your advocacy,
