New FDA Regulations on E-Cigarettes

e-cigarette

The Food and Drug Administration has created new regulations that will affect the marketing and sale of e-cigarettes, a move that has been praised by many in the tobacco use prevention field.

New FDA rules will prohibit the sale of e-cigarettes to people under age 18 and require that buyers show photo identification to prove their age. Many states already have such rules; however, this will mandate it nationwide.

One of the most noteworthy changes included is that cigar and e-cigarette producers will now be required to register with the FDA and provide them with details of their products’ ingredients, manufacturing processes, and scientific data. New rules would also subject producers to FDA inspections, ban free samples, and prohibit producers from marketing products as “mild” or “light” unless given express permission from the FDA.

These new rules take effect in 90 days.

See more information on these new regulations from the New York Times here.
